Obituary

Martin Edward Shumsky, 93, of Ludington, went to be with the Lord Thursday, November 2, 2017, at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital. He was born December 6, 1923, in Suttons Bay, Michigan, the son of Martin A. and Beatrice (Hulet) Shumsky.

Martin was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the US ARMY. He was a life-time member of the American Legion Post #76 and a Forth Degree, Knights of Columbus, in Ludington.

Martin was an engineer for the Railroad, his passion for his work was well-known by family and friends because he commonly referred to this as, "playing with the trains."As a boy, he grew up watching the trains pass daily, becoming an engineer was his dream come true.

A creative and talented man, Martin loved building things, including 2 homes. He loved nature and enjoyed being outside working in his garden and canning its harvest. He also enjoyed cooking for his family and often volunteered these skills whenever he could. Martin and his wife enjoyed travelling, they acquired a retirement home in Florida to visit their son and family for part of the year. Most of all, Martin loved spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandsons.

Martin is survived by his bride of 70 years, Freda Mae Shumsky; 3 children, William (Michele) Shumsky of Bradon, Florida, Janet Horacek of Ludington, and Peggy (Dennis) Grant of Ludington; 7 grandchildren, Christa (Daniel) LaDuke of Ludington, Brian (Erica) Shumsky of Denver, Colorado, Matthew (Kendra) Grant of Baden, Pennsylvania, Jennifer Schembri of Valrico, Florida, Brandon (Virginia) Grant of Ludington, Gina (Mike) Youngblood of Tampa, Florida, and Serra (Patrick) Saxton of Ludington; 18 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandsons; 3 sisters, Lois Johnson of Leroy, Connie (Marvin) Coker of Scottville, and Sally (Jerry) Skiver of Union City, Indiana; his brother, Danny (Sandy) Bentz of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Martin was preceded in death by: his parents, his sister, Shirley Beimer; his brother John Shumsky at birth; his daughter, and his son-in-law, Dennis Grant.

Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 PM, Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at St. Simon Catholic Church, in Ludington, with Father Joe Fix presiding. Following Mass there will be a luncheon at the Senior Center.  Visitation will be held at the church Wednesday from 11:00 AM until time of Mass.  Interment will be in the Pere Marquette Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ludington Area Catholic School or Mason County Animal Shelter.
