Obituary

Mrs. Maude Catherine Artz, age 99, of Walkerville, Michigan, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2014. She was born October 28, 1914, in Elbridge Township to Mitchell and Emma (Kequom) Battice. She married Elmer Artz on September 2, 1966, in Manistee, and he preceded her in death in October 1982.
She was a line operator for Stokleys until her retirement. Mrs. Artz was a member of the Grand River Band of Ottawa Indians. She was a skilled basket maker and a good cook; her family especially remembers her pressure-cooked chicken, beef stew, and Indian bread.

Maude is survived by her daughter-in-law, Georgia Battice; her granddaughter, Brenda (Brett) Bromley; five great-grandchildren, Petra, Evita, Therese, Gianna, and Josef Bromley; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer Artz; her son, Norman Battice in May 2010; five brothers; and two sisters.

The Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Artz will be Thursday, July 17, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Weare with Father Phillip Sliwinski presiding. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Elbridge. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at King Funeral Home. The family requests that any memorials be directed to Crystal Valley Care Fund, P.O. Box 451, Hart, MI 49420.
