Obituary

Mr. Maurice Edgar Chirstensen, age 89 of Ludington, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Saturday November 22, 2008 at Tendercare of Ludington. He was born April 23, 1919 on his sister Leona's 9th birthday in Elkhorn, Iowa. At the age of one he moved to Ludington with his parents: Nels Jorgen and Maria (Hansen) Christensen. Maurice and Phyllis Kokx of Pentwater were married May 11, 1944 at St. Joseph's Church in Weare. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone during WWII. Maurice, Phyllis and her brothers, Earl, Ken and Maurice "Red" Kokx owned the Butcher's Friend and Saw Company in Pentwater. He later went to work at Misco-Howmet and retired in 1981 as Journeyman Millwright. After his retirement, Maurice and Phyllis enjoyed many winters in Florida. It was there he began to paint many beautiful landscapes. Maurice also created numerous metal sculptures using nuts, bolts, and many scraps. He also enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of the Pentwater VFW Post 6017, Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree and the Pentwater Fire Department. Maurice was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis in 2001, his son, Gary in 1951 and his son in law, Dan McDonald in 2007. Also preceding Maurice in death were his parents, sisters, Martha (Einar) Jensen, Leona (Roy) Peterson and brother, N. Peter (Vera Morton and Marge Peterson Husted). Maurice is survived by his sons, Larry of Marietta, GA, Kevin (Fiance, Tari Wright) of Plainwell, MI, and a daughter, Mary McDonald of Ludington, MI. Maurice is also survived by his four grandchildren: Sarah (Geoff) Williams of Ludington, Jim (Kiana) McDonald of Parker, CO, Michael Christensen of Parker, CO and Renee Christensen of Richland, MI. The Mass of the Resurrection will be offered Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. from St. Vincent Catholic Church-Pentwater with Fr. Anton Tran as Celebrant. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery-Weare. Visitation will be Tuesday one hour prior to the Mass at the Church. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Michigan.
