IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael Phillip
Nickerson
September 28, 1988 – March 20, 2025
Michael Phillip Nickerson was brought into our universe kicking and screaming on September 28th, 1988 at 4:21pm, to parents Gregory Nickerson and Debra (Swan) Nickerson of Kingsley, MI. He tragically passed away unexpectedly on March 20th, 2025, of natural causes.
There were many components that made up our beloved Mike. Intellectuality, tender heartedness, level-headedness, generosity, stubbornness, and the ability to debate until the cows came home. Mike could take any situation and think about it in the most cool, calm, and collected manner possible - something his two sisters relied on quite often. Mike was the rock. The home base.
Mike graduated from Kingsley High School in June 2006. Anyone that spent five minutes with him knew he was nothing short of a genius. He could effectively use a desktop computer at 18 months old and could read encyclopedias and cookbooks before he even started kindergarten. He even read to his Kindergarten and 1st grade classmates when the teachers had to step out. He could repair just about anything that was broken, and spent most of his adult life repairing computers, phones, etc. He dreamt of being an Air Force pilot, but eyesight issues prevented that from becoming a reality. So he settled with learning everything he could about aircraft; down to knowing every switch and button for just about any plane out there in a simulator he owned.
Mike was never one for sports and outdoors, but he definitely had hobbies of his own. And despite not having a whole lot that physically relied on him besides his beloved cat, Buddy, he was very much a natural born leader. He was very active in things like D&D (a tabletop fantasy game), where he would run the continuous game with his friends and sister, Sara. He was also in charge of 40-50 real players in ARMA 3 (a military-style online game), which he played religiously for over 10 years. They describe him as a great mentor, and his warrior status is something they will always remember. He gained many friendships through this game, and even had a chance to meet up with them for a fun weekend in TN.
Mike cherished his time he spent with his family, and he would take any opportunity he could to do so. He loved to laugh, joke, make witty comments, and quote any Jim Carrey movie (he could recite "Liar, Liar" start to finish without help). He loved playing Axis and Allies with his dad and uncles/cousins. He and his mom would sit and watch Star Trek when he was young, which is where his love of space blossomed. Children were never his thing until he had a niece and nephews. Even when their high-pitched squealing would have Mike pondering if his ear drums were ruptured, he took every opportunity to show those four kids all the love he had.
Mike's love of deep space was something he was always willing to talk about to anyone that would listen. The amount of knowledge this young man had on it and everything to do with it was not like anything else. He had always wanted to travel to space, and even stay there if he could. For this reason, we are asking that in lieu of flowers, that you'd consider donating to his final destination: space. We will always love you, Mike. May you Live Long and Prosper.
Mike is survived by his mother Debra Nickerson of Kingsley, MI, father Gregory (Beth) Nickerson of Kingsley, MI, sisters Laura (Joseph) Hoch of Buckley, MI and Sara (Matt M.) Nickerson of Kingsley, MI, his nephews Warren, Quentin, and Conner Hoch, niece Shea Metzger, step siblings, Jessica (Vishal) Birdsey of Hazel Park, MI, Tyler Weatherholt of Traverse City, MI, Damian Durga of Traverse City, MI, his treasured cat, Buddy, as well as many cherished aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Mike is preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Peggy Swan of Kingsley, MI, and Max and Donaldine Nickerson of Kingsley, MI, aunt Pamela Nickerson of Grawn, MI, and uncle Brad Nickerson of Kingsley, MI.
Mike's celebration of life will be held at the Kingsley United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 29th, 2025, at 11am. There will be a luncheon to follow immediately afterwards. Please bring plenty of memories to share between friends and family.
