Obituary

Mr. Mureland K. "Jack" "Gunner", age 89 of Pentwater, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at home on Sunday, April 11, 2010. He was born at home in Leavitt Township near Walkerville to Bruce and Lulu (Kalman) Mitteer on December 10, 1920. He was a W.W. II Veteran of the US Army from 1942-1946 as a Motor Sergeant with the 78th Infantry Division in France, Belgium and Germany. He fought in the Battle of the Buldge, Hurtgen Forrest and was the first unit to cross the Rhine on the Ludenforff Bridge at Remagen after its capture. He received the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and three Battle Stars. He returned home in 1946. He spent most of his life working as an Operating Engineer, Business Agent, Master Mechanic and Foreman on many jobs. He loved his work and fellow workers knew him as "Gunner". He was a member of the International Operating Engineers Local 324 for over sixty years. He was a life member of the D.A.V. of Hart and a member of the American Legion Edwin Ewing Post 76 of Ludington. He always said he couldn't ask for a better or happier life. He was always a willing helper to everyone. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, winters in Florida, dancing, card games, telling war stories and time spent with family and friends. He married Mary Anne Ziegler in 1944 and she passed away in 1974. He married Mary Lou VanNortwick in 1976. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Mary Anne, sisters, Phyllis Wygant and Bonieta Borst. He is survived by his wife Mary Lou and daughters Linda (Tom) Foster of Hart, Susan (John) Flaherty of Germantown, TN, Paula (Bob) Bates of LaQuinta, CA, sons, Richard Mitteer of Flushing, MI, Bruce (Elsie) Mitteer of Shelby and Jack (Deborah) Mitteer of New Era, step-sons, Bryan (Beth) VanNortwick of Raleigh, NC, Kelvin (Margaret) VanNortwick of Novi, MI and Mark (Deborah) VanNortwick of Lansing, MI, sister Marva (Herb) Allen of Dunedin, FL, twenty six grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service for Mr. Mitteer will be held Thursday, April 15, 2010 11:00 A.M. from the Centenary United Methodist Church in Pentwater with Pastor Harris Hoekwater officiating. Interment will be in the Hart Cemetery, with full Military Honors provided by the American Legion Edwin Ewing Post 76 of Ludington. Visitation will be Wednesday 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the Tate-King Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be given to the Oceana County Council on Aging or the Pentwater Public Library.
