Nancy L. Merchant passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 19, 2023, after her long battle with Dementia.

She was born January 23, 1936, the daughter of Elmer and Margaret (Hixson) Hiembeck in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  She met the love of her life, James H. Merchant, and married him 1956. They were married for 48 years.   She followed her husband while he was serving in the US Navy, and they moved to Michigan in 1957.

Nancy worked for the Alpena school system until they moved to Kewadin in 1981.  She also worked for Burnett Food, in Elk Rapids, and many years at White Birch Inn.

Her greatest love in life were her children: Wendy (James) Hatch, James Merchant Jr. & Barry (Sheryl) Merchant; her Grandchildren, Tim, Adam, Nick, Andrew, Holly & Brandon; Great Grandchildren, Lilly, Jake, Mason, Issy, Jenna, Chole, Mia, Zander, Ellie, Jackson, Gracie & baby Jazime coming in March.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband James Merchant Sr.; son Dennis; brother, Irwin (Butch) Himebeck; and a sister-in-law, Dixie Merchant.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, December 4, 2023, at Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Covell-Elk Rapids Chapel, 312 Pine Street, Elk Rapids where friends are invited to meet with the family beginning at 10:00 AM until the time of the services.  Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.
