Obituary

Nancy Kay Townsend, 82, of Montague, passed away Sunday, October 6, 2024. She was born September 17, 1942, in Grand Rapids, the daughter of John and Leona (Bodman) Heileman.

Nancy graduated from Howard City High School, where she was actively involved and made many lifelong friends. As a cheerleader, her spirited personality shone through, and she remained close to many of her classmates over the years. After high school, she pursued her passion for business at Muskegon Business College, where she earned her associate's degree. Nancy went on to build a successful career as a secretary and accountant, using her sharp organizational skills and attention to detail to support her work and community.

On August 15th, 1964, Nancy Heileman married Charles Townsend, and they spent 60 wonderful years together. They first met through a mutual friend in Grand Rapids, and after dating for a year, Nancy somehow decided to say yes to Charles' proposal. Their early years of marriage took them to Muskegon, Kalamazoo, and Swartz Creek, as they supported Charles' educational journey. While living in Kalamazoo, they welcomed their son, Brian. Throughout this time, Nancy was a loving and supportive wife and mother, standing by Charles through his education and career. Eventually, they made a home on Townsend Court in Montague, where they spent many happy years together. They enjoyed listening to country western music, spending time with friends, and embracing the simple joys of life.

Nancy had a zest for life and a wonderful sense of humor, which was especially evident in the way she lovingly "put up with" her husband, Charles, for 60 years. She was never shy about speaking her mind, always sharing her thoughts with honesty and a touch of wit. Nancy enjoyed an occasional glass of White Zinfandel wine, often while chatting with friends or relaxing after a busy day. A talented homemaker, she loved sewing, knitting, and cooking, filling her home with warmth and creativity. She cherished her excursions with "the girls," where laughter and memories were always in abundance. Nancy also had a keen eye for home decor and couldn't resist a good wallpaper—turning each room into a reflection of her care and personality.

Nancy is survived by: her husband, Dr. Charles Townsend; child, Brian Townsend; grandchildren, Jessica LaVene, Jordon Petee, and Alexandria Miller; and brother, Steven Ward.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, John and Leona Heileman.
