Neil Frederick
Garceau
April 22, 1933 – April 24, 2026
Neil Frederick Garceau, 93, of Des Plaines, Illinois, formerly of Traverse City, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 24, 2026, at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. He was born April 22, 1933, in Ishpeming, Michigan, the son of Frederick and Viola (Lahti) Garceau.
Neil earned his degree in mining engineering from Michigan Technological University in the 1950s, beginning a long and dedicated career in the gypsum industry. He started his work in the mines and, through hard work and steady determination, rose to become Works Manager of the East Chicago facility for U.S. Gypsum Company. He took great pride in his work and the path he built over the years.
Outside of his career, Neil found his greatest joy in the outdoors. He was an avid walker who appreciated the simple beauty of nature and the peace it brought. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, golfing, and berry picking—activities that reflected his love of being active and connected to the world around him. At home, Neil was a true jack of all trades, always finding something to fix, build, or improve. He took quiet satisfaction in keeping busy and making any place he lived feel cared for and complete, a reflection of his steady hands and practical skills.
Neil will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Grace Garceau; his daughter, Pam Garceau; his son, Jim Garceau and daughter-in-law, Denise Garceau; and his cherished grandchildren, Marissa, Nick, Lauren, and Lexi. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and partner in life, Fay Marie Chapman Garceau, who passed away on November 18, 2023, after 65 years of marriage and a lifetime of shared memories. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his son, Peter Garceau, who passed away in March 2023.
In keeping with his wishes, no formal services will be held. His life will be remembered quietly by those who knew and loved him.
Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Covell-Traverse City Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
