Mrs. Norma Ann Oly, age 71, of Pentwater MI, formerly of Grand Rapids, passed away on Sunday, July 9 with family by her side, after a brief but courageous battle with lung cancer. Norma was born in Grand Rapids, MI on August 28, 1945 the daughter of William and Leona Captain. After graduating from Union High School in 1963, she attended Western Michigan University where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Education in '67 and her Master's Degree a year later. A life-long learner, Norma was a proud educator who spent 32 years with the Grand Rapids Public Schools as a 4th/5th grade teacher, reading specialist, and in curriculum development. After retiring to Pentwater in 2000, Norma stayed active by volunteering her time with many organizations including the Pentwater Womens Club, Pentwater Lake Association, and the Grand Kent Investment Club. Norma loved to travel and could always be found reading a new book but most of all she loved spending time with her two most fabulous shopping partners, her granddaughters Madelyn and Allyson. Norma is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 50 years, Hank Oly; her most adored son and cherished daughter-in-law, John and Daphne Oly of Hudsonville; grandchildren Madelyn and Allyson Oly; sister Marge Captain of Austin, TX; brother Bill Captain of Parkersburg, WV; sister-in-law Tina Dyksma of Grand Rapids; brother-in-law Bob Oly of Kentwood; several nieces and nephews, cousins, and special friends. Friends are invited to visit with family on Sunday, July 23 from 2-4pm at the King Funeral Home in Hart, MI. A private interment will be held at Rosedale Memorial Park.
