Otis Henry Jarvie, 85, of Ludington, passed away January 4, 2018, at Tendercare of Ludington. He was born March 21, 1932, in Sault Saint Marie, MI the son of Henry and Mabel (Cartwright) Jarvie.
Otis served as a corporal in the Army from 1953 to 55 where he was stationed in Germany. He was married to his beautiful wife Patsy on June 22, 1957 in Oak Lawn, IL. One year later, he graduated from Western Michigan University with his teaching degree. The family moved to Mason County in 1963 where he taught the Industrial Art classes at Mason County Eastern in Custer until his retirement in 1987. Soon after retirement he and his wife became full time RVers, traveling throughout the country for over a decade.
Otis was actively involved at Emanuel Lutheran Church, and in Ham Radio Operators of Mason County, VFW of Rudyard, Michigan, and officiating high school basketball and football. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. Otis loved outdoor activities including working as a ranger at Ludington State Park. He was instrumental in forming the first union negotiations for teachers at Mason County Eastern.
He is survived by: his wife of 60 years, Patsy (Koestler); his children, Carol (Jim) Overholt of Sidney Ohio, Catherine Jarvie of South Haven, and Cindy Jarvie of Ludington; siblings: Robert Jarvie, Henry (Jo) Jarvie, Polly (Eugene) Ross, and Prudy (Jim) Allen; grandchildren, Justin (Amanda) Jarvie, Kris Castillo, Anthony (Crystal) Castillo, Bryan (Elaine) Overholt, and Leah (Julian) Gonzalez; 9 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Otis was preceded in death by his parents and his sister-in-law, Renee (Robert) Jarvie.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 11:30 AM, Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Ludington. The family with receive friends Wednesday from 10:30 AM until time of services at the church.
