Paula Joanne Holmes-Greeley, age 62, of North Muskegon, Michigan, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014. She was born January 9, 1952, in Lansing, Michigan, to C. Jonathan and Ruth (Orr) Holmes. She graduated from Lansing Eastern High School with the class of 1970 and received her BA degree from Michigan State University in 1974 in journalism. She married Michael Greeley on September 20, 1980, in Lansing; they were married thirty-three years. Paula's career in journalism led her to employment as the assistant press secretary for Governor William G. Milliken, the Editor of the Charlevoix Courier, and Managing Editor for the Petoskey News Review. She also served as the News Editor and the Editorial Page Editor for the Muskegon Chronicle and, most recently, as the Community Engagement Specialist for the Muskegon Chronicle-MLive.com. She retired January 10, 2014. Paula was a board member of the Muskegon County Museum and Harbor Hospice, a volunteer at the annual Summer Celebration and the Wings of Mercy Fly-In, and also volunteered with her husband, Mike, at the Seaway Run. She was very active in the Irish Music Festival and Feis Dance Competition and was instrumental in organizing concerts in downtown Muskegon as the Community Engagement Specialist. She was also an avid Michigan State University fan. (Go Green!)
Paula is survived by her husband, Michael Greeley; two sons, Patrick Greeley of Kalamazoo and Matthew Greeley of Lansing; one sister, Lisa (Bill) Bauman of Grand Rapids; two brothers, C. Jeffrey (Ginna) Holmes, MD of Alma and Jonathan (Patricia) Holmes of Honolulu, Hawaii; and several nieces and nephews, Stacie (Piper Walker) Carlson, B.J. (Stephanie) Bauman, Becca Bauman, C. Joshua Holmes, Chelsea Holmes, Nathaniel Holmes, Leigh Holmes, Akemi Holmes, Satsu Holmes, and Jay Holmes. She was preceded in death by her parents.
The Funeral Service for Paula will be Saturday, February 1, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at Sytsema Funeral Home - Lee Chapel 6291 Harvey Street, Norton Shores, MI, 49444 with Rev. Gerald F. Hagans officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Sytsema Funeral Home - Lee Chapel.
