October 13, 1925 – June 21, 2022
Ralph W. Appell, age 96, of Elk Rapids, Michigan, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his own home on Tuesday June 21, 2022. He was born October 16, 1925, in Pontiac, Michigan. In 1943 he graduated from Baldwin High School in Birmingham, Michigan. At age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, during WWll, where he served as a radio operator. Ralph graduated from Alma College in 1950 with a Teaching Certificate in Speech. He married Roma, mother of his three girls, and raised his family in Rockford, Michigan.
He was employed by Wolverine World Wide in Human Resources for 34 years. Upon retirement, he was the Corporate Director of Employee Services. In 1982, Ralph married his second wife, Leone, and they relocated to their home in Elk Rapids. They enjoyed many winters in Zephyrhills, Florida.
Ralph's charisma and sense of humor touched many lives. He was sharp and witty with an extraordinary memory. He loved being with his family and their many gatherings together. He enjoyed golf and was previously the President of Elk Rapids Golf Club. He could be seen outside on his riding mower, caring meticulously for his lawn. He took great pride in the upkeep of his home and yard.
Ralph was preceded in death by: his parents, Robert and Ruth (Streiter) Appell; wives, Roma Appell and Leone Appell; and son-in-law, Christopher Laraway.
He will be greatly missed by: his three daughters, Kathryn Laraway, Nancy Appell, and Jane (Scott) Spees; three grandsons, Michael (Meredith) Laraway, Bryan (Tatiana) Laraway, and Trevor Spees; three great-grandchildren, Sloane, Cabot, and Bode Laraway; brother, Lloyd Appell and family. He is also survived by: Leone's daughter, Alisa (Keith) Mullins; grandchildren, Lauren (Nick) Davaloz, Josh (Brittani) Mullins; and great-grandson Lincoln Davaloz.
He had a long life well lived. The family hopes all who knew Ralph, will celebrate his life in their own way. In accordance to his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.
He will never be forgotten, always in our hearts!
