IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard "Dick"
Allen Hunt
December 31, 1936 – October 10, 2024
Richard "Dick" Allen Hunt, 87, of Montague, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the Harbor Hospice Poppen Residence. He was born December 31, 1936, in Muskegon, the son of Walt and Esther (Gillan) Hunt.
Dick graduated from Montague High School in 1955. After high school, he attended Central Michigan University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science, in Business Administration, in 1959. During his college years, he participated in the ROTC program and proudly served our country in the United States Army following graduation. While stationed in Korea, Dick was an air observer along the DMZ, achieving the infantry rank of Captain.
In 1961, Dick married his high school sweetheart, Jean Burley, and they were lifelong residents of Montague. Together, they raised two daughters and built a lifetime of shared memories in their home. Dick prided himself on caring for his home and could often be found "putzing" around the several acres of land he owned.
For 33 years, Dick was a partner in Hunt Hardware, until retiring in 1998. He was active in the community, serving on the Montague City Council, and as Mayor of Montague. He was elected for several terms on the school board of Montague Area Public Schools and was proud to see the construction of the MACC during his tenure.
Dick was an avid snowmobiler, riding in many western states, Alaska, Canada, and the upper peninsula of Michigan. The Rough Riders referred to him as "Cookie", as he always had treats on the trails. Dick was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, Michigan Snowmobile Association, and the White Lake Eagles.
Richard is survived by: his wife of nearly 63 years, Jean; as well as his daughters, Julie (Troy) Hunt Barnhardt and Carrie (Eric) Hagen; brother, Morris "Pete" Hunt; sisters, Edith (Richard) Smith, Sharon Schiller, and Cindy (David) Francis; and his grandchildren, Riley and Qinlan Hagen, and Kaia Barnhardt, whom he enjoyed spending time with.
If you knew Dick, you know that his love language was creating checklists and making sure things were completed for the people he loved; he continued to ensure his family knew things were taken care of until his final days (in fact, he wrote most of this obituary). In his memory, please check your oil, rotate your tires, and replace your furnace filter.
In accordance with Richard's wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to The Leila and Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence - Harbor Hospice, https://harborhospicemi.org/services/poppen-hospice-residence/
Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, White Lake Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
