Obituary

Richard Roy Bantien of Elk Rapids, age 93, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, in Traverse City, MI. Born on September 14, 1932 in Armada, MI, Richard lived a long and deeply meaningful life shaped by love, family and community.

An Eastern Michigan University graduate, Richard met the love of his life, Suzanne Vaughn, while on spring break in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. — a chance encounter that became the foundation of a 69-year marriage filled with devotion and joy. Together they raised four children: Rick (Teresa), Tim (Debbie), Steve (Suzanne) and Jenny (Scott) in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI, while spending summers in Elk Rapids. Richard took immense pride in his growing family which includes nine grandchildren: Scott (Amanda), Ricky (Erikah), Kristin (Joe), Emily (De'Rhon), Brittney (Jason), Sarah (Dan), Brian (Chelsea), Mitchell (Brooke), Taylor and 10 great grandchildren: Ivy, Landon, Carter, Camden, Corbin, Makenna, Ella, Emerson, Riley and Tyler. Each of whom brought him tremendous happiness.

A proud Army veteran, Richard served his country with honor before dedicating his career to education in Southlake Public Schools, St. Clair Shores, MI. He was known as a patient, thoughtful and inspiring teacher who believed deeply in the potential of every student. His influence extended far beyond the classroom touching countless lives over the years.

Upon retirement, Richard became a full-time resident of Elk Rapids, a community he cherished. He was a familiar and beloved presence in town through the businesses he owned and operated throughout the years, including Ship N' Shore, Dari Dip and Little Treasures Toy Shop. His work helped shape the character of the village.

Gifted with a natural ear for music, Richard often entertained family and friends with his piano and bass playing. His music paired with his vivid storytelling — especially tales of growing up in Armada and the many experiences that shaped his life — created memories his loved ones will treasure.

Richard is preceded in death by his father Roy Bantien, mother Doris Bantien (Downey), brother Robert Bantien and son-in-law Scott Jantz. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.

Those who knew Richard will remember a man of warmth, humor, humility and unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on in the generations he nurtured, the students he guided and the community he served. His family takes comfort in knowing he is at peace and reunited with those who went before him.

In honoring Richard's wishes, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends share a favorite memory of Richard in the online guestbook.

Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Covell-Traverse City Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
