Richard "Buzz"
Gozdzialski
Nov 12, 1953 — Jul 8, 2026
Traverse City
Richard Chester Gozdzialski, affectionately known as “Buzz”, 72, of Traverse City, MI, fought bone marrow cancer with remarkable courage and determination. He succumbed to the disease at home on July 8th, 2026.
Born on November 12th, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan to the late Harry and Mary Gozdzialski, he was the beloved husband of Maryjo Shaw. Buzz is survived by his sister Harriet (Louie) Aquino and preceded in death by his brother Daniel Gozdzialski. He is also survived by his children Michael (Emily) Gozdzialski and Kristin Macan as well as his two grandchildren Oaklynn and Liam.
Leaning on the skills learned through trade school, Buzz became a union carpenter in Detroit and worked on iconic buildings like the Renaissance Center and the Westin in Southfield. Over this 40+ year career in construction, he worked in many parts of the United States including South Carolina and Texas. His home in Traverse City became his masterpiece, embodying both his creativity in woodworking and his extraordinary talent as a builder. Throughout his many projects, he served as a mentor to both friends and family who worked with him, fostering confidence, a strong work ethic, and perseverance that extended well beyond the job site.
Buzz had many hobbies that he enjoyed thoroughly throughout his life. His favorite past time was fishing, which he did year-round, in absolutely any condition. He played every card game imaginable, and he prided himself on being the best at Pinochle. Mike and Buzz had some of their best times during rounds of golf and he was proud to have had a hole-in-one.
Buzz and Maryjo were happily married for over 20 years. They spent most of their marriage spending time between Dearborn and Traverse City, settling permanently in the latter in the last few years. They loved to host friends, family and guests throughout the year. They regularly played cards, enjoyed long walks with their two dogs and seeing the world. During his treatment at the Mott Cancer Center at the University of Michigan, they quickly became a favorite among the more than 30 doctors and nurses on his care team, who grew to care for Buzz as though he were family. Maryjo tirelessly stayed by Buzz’s side throughout his illness as his caregiver and companion. He left this world in peace, feeling deeply loved.
Buzz made an indelible lasting impression on everyone he met and once you became his friend, you were friends for life. He did this through humor and his unique and infectious laugh. Often, he would deliver a warm pie as a thank you or freely offer his guidance on a construction project. His personality and undying loyalty allowed him to maintain many lifelong friendships.
Buzz Gozdzialski fully lived every day with purpose and enriched the lives of all who knew him.
May he rest in eternal peace.
