Obituary

Richard D. Davis, 88, of Ludington, MI, beloved husband, father, grandfather , great-grandfather and teacher, passed away on July 14, 2018.  He was born in Norristown, PA on February 12, 1930 to William and Lois (Wentling) Davis.

Richard graduated from Norristown High School, class of 1948.  He attended Penn State, school of horticulture, the Warton School of Business at University of Pennsylvania, and graduated from Western Michigan University, with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education.

Richard was a Staff Sergeant in the US Air Force serving in the Korean War.  During his service, he flew 29 missions over North Korea as a Tail Gunner on a B29 bomber named "The Lonesome Polecat".  When he returned from the war he met the love of his life, Carollyn (Sue) Davis. They were married almost 63 years.

Richard was employed as a principal and elementary school teacher at York School in Lansdale, PA, and a teacher at White Pigeon MI, Upper Gwynedd Elementary School, Upper Gwynedd, PA, Fairplain East School in Benton Harbor, MI, and at Lakeview, Hamlin, and Pere Marquette schools in Ludington, MI.  He was also a summer teacher for the migrant program in Riverton Twp., MI.

Richard was very involved with community activities.  He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and entertained at VA Hospitals and the Red Cross playing piano.  He was a member of the Ludington and Manistee Elks Clubs, a member of the Jaycees of PA and MI (Vice President in Benton Harbor), and a member of the Optimist Club of MI (Vice President).  He ran the ice rink at 4th Ward, was a Boy Scout District Chair for Mason and Oceana Counties, coached and refereed flag football, was the President of the Tamarac Village Association, a member of the Ludington Boat Club and was the Treasurer for the Ludington Mural Society.

He loved golf and was a 30-year member at Lincoln Hills Country Club.  He enjoyed fishing, wood carving, hunting, gardening, boating, scuba diving, traveling, painting, playing piano, and collecting fossils.

He is survived by his wife, Carollyn (Sue) Davis, son, Dr. Derek Davis of Boise, ID, daughter Kimberly (Chris) Boes of Grandville, MI, and son Scott (Kate) Davis of Denver, CO, grandchildren Emily (Lucas) Brown, James Davis, Katherine Davis, Alyssa Boes, Natalie Boes, Hayley Davis, Emma Davis, and great grandchildren: Elijah, Noah, Jacob, Mary Jane, John, Elizabeth, and Matthew (due soon) Brown.

A memorial service and Celebration of his Life, will take place at 11:00 AM, Friday, August 24, 2018 at the United Methodist Church, 5810 Bryant Road, Ludington MI.  Family will receive visitors at 10:00 AM prior to the service. A luncheon will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oceana County Medical Care Facility in Hart, MI. or the United Methodist Church of Ludington.
