Obituary

Dr. Richard A. Murie, born in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio on Oct. 3, 1923, retired doctor of chemistry, professor, and photographer surrendered his borrowed molecules and elements and returned to an essential state of being on March 20, 2022. All reactions are complete and all formulae resolved.

Devoted husband to Rose Marie (Stanek) for 66 years, this kind optimist was proud of his WWII service on the USS Nevada and his part in the D-Day invasion. He was even more proud of his role as a teacher helping struggling chemistry students succeed. He expressed his love for Spain and Latin America by teaching graduate students in universities throughout Mexico. Much of his professional career as a research chemist was done at GM's Tech Center in Warren, MI, on super-magnets and electric battery materials.

Following retirement Richard and Rose Marie relocated to Bella Vista, Arkansas where they continued their love of photography together. After her death, Richard earned a masters degree in Spanish Studies from the University of Arkansas at the age of 86.

Long an advocate of swimming, healthy foods and his "C 3 R" philosophy, ( C ommunication, C ompassion, C ooperation and R esponsibility.) Dick's life was a legacy of good works and kind words.

Richard is survived by his son Clifton (Vernie Mae Nagy), daughter Debra Duncan (William), grand-children Laura Carter (Dan), Stephani Duncan (Adam Daniel), and Heather Birt (Isabelle), and great-grandchildren Riley and Penelope. He also leaves behind a large collection of Learning Company videos, an immense amount of pre-digital photo gear, many books about the language and culture of Latin America, and several shelves of vitamin and herbal supplements.

His message to all, "Set achievable goals for yourself. Always keep learning."

Donations in memory should be directed to the YMCA.

Military services will be held on Saturday, April 23rd at 2pm at Veterans Memorial Park on West 11th Street, Traverse City
