Obituary

Mr. Richard "Rick" L. Smith, age 62, of Mears, MI, passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2015. He was born September 24, 1952 in Ludington, MI, son of Lyle and Virginia (Kotecki) Smith. After high school, he was married to Barbara Titus for fourteen years and had two sons, while serving in the United States Air Force in Greenland. Rick married Mary Jane Root on February 27, 1988 in Shelby, MI. He was a building contractor owning and operating Northwind Construction for 26 years. Rick was a member of the Home Builders Association and the Silver Lake Sand Dune Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed riding and taking trips on his Harley with the Harley Owners Group, going to his cabin in Irons, doing yard work, snowmobiling, playing cribbage and cards, both on line and with his friends and family. Rick is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Smith of Silver Lake, MI; two sons, Eric (Lisa) Smith of Rosemont, MN, and Chad (Samantha Harjes) Smith of Silver Lake, MI; step-daughter, Sarah Grubb of Traverse City, MI; his father, Lyle Smith of Hart, MI; sister, Julie (Brent) Taylor of Shelby, MI; brothers, Doug (Glenda) Smith of New Era, MI, and Jason Smith of Muskegon, MI; He was also expecting his first grandchild in June of 2015. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Smith and sister, Victoria. The Memorial Service for Richard will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday,January 19, 2015, at the King Funeral Home in Hart with Pastor Stephen Samuelson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior the service at the funeral home.
