Robert M. Claflin, 96, a longtime professor of veterinary medicine at Purdue University who retired in Ludington and lived here for more than 20 years, died April 27, 2018, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Born Nov. 11, 1921, Claflin grew up on his family's farm in Montrose, Michigan. He entered the Navy during World War II and attended Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine on the G.I. Bill.

Claflin moved to Indiana after graduating and played a key role in the founding of Purdue's College of Veterinary Medicine. He served in various positions at the college from 1952 to 1988, including associate dean of the veterinary school.

Upon retiring, Robert and his wife Barbara moved to Ludington where they restored one of the oldest homes in the city at the corner of Lakeshore Drive and Tinkham Avenue. They were involved in several civic organizations, including the Mason County Historical Society. Robert is a past president of the Rotary Club of Ludington.

Claflin could be frequently seen walking his dog around Oriole Field until he suffered health problems in 2013 that led to his move to Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara in 1997. Claflin is survived by three children, Deborah (married to Eric Marshall) of Bangor, Maine; Blair (married to Beth Richardson) of Indianapolis and Kate, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; his brother Douglas, of Greenville, Michigan, and six grandchildren.
