IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert Charles
Lewis
January 3, 1931 – April 2, 2022
Robert C. "Bob" Lewis, of Montague, Michigan, died Saturday, April 2, 2022, at the age of 91 of natural causes at home with his family. Bob was born January 3, 1931, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Fred E. & Nellie M. Lewis, and was the youngest of five children: Harold, Roger, Fred Jr., LaVera, and Robert. The Lewis family had relocated from Ohio to Michigan after family members were lost to typhoid fever from flooding.
Bob was raised in Reed City, where the family operated a meat market & grocery store, then in Montague, where he resided for the rest of his life. He was a graduate of Montague High School, and in 1952 married Georgia Mae Deater of Rothbury. They had five children together: Robert, Charles, Renee, Rachel, and Steven.
Bob enjoyed operating construction equipment, working for Tabor Construction, and his own small construction company for nearly a decade. His kids have many fond memories of riding along in his old Ford dump truck. A growing family necessitated he move on to Ott Chemical/Story Chemical, where he was a supervisor for many years, and finally to Lorin Industries, retiring in 1996 at age 65.
Always a great Dad and a wonderful Grandpa, Bob never missed a birthday, baseball game, or any event that involved his kids, grandkids, and even great-grandkids. He loved his kids and was proud to say that his family and children were his greatest accomplishments.
Bob was a long time member of White Lake Baptist Church and the Montague Museum. At the museum he spent many happy hours searching through historical photos to use as a guide for the Hildebrandt family with the reconstruction of the Lewis House in Whitehall, and finding historical links to the old Lewis family market in downtown Montague.
He had a lifelong fascination with all things mechanical, collecting many tractors and old trucks. In his retirement, he loved to walk, cut firewood, a and spend time in his garage, working on his collection of projects with his best friend and "oldest son" Dan Parsons of Montague.
Bob was preceded in death by his wives; siblings; son, Charles; and daughter-in-law Suellen.
The family would like to thank Visiting Physicians Association and Dr. Huver for the outstanding compassion and care they provided our dad. Their in-home visits were an absolute blessing, and made it possible for him to be at home with the ones he loved. The family would also like to thank Grace Hospice, especially Nita and Kathy for being there when we needed them most, and for helping us through the most difficult times.
A final thank-you to Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, and to Brad Vanderlaan, for reshuffling an already full schedule to fulfill the final wishes and arrangements for our dad.
