Obituary

Robert D. Toms, 66, died Friday, December 16, 2022, at The Lighthouse Rehab Center in Kingsley, Michigan. Robert was born on August 21, 1956, in Dearborn, Michigan, the son of Bruce and Anna Toms.

His childhood was spent in Livonia, Michigan, where he attended Churchill High School, earned a GED, and later graduated from the Adult Learning Center in Caro, Michigan. As a young adult, he worked at the Ford Assembly Plant in Novi, Michigan. He loved the beauty in nature and his visits to many National Parks. His greatest passions were photography, artistic sketching, bike riding, and music. He was proficient on the piano.

At age 25, he was tragically injured while riding his bicycle in a hit-and-run accident which left him comatose for five weeks. He fought valiantly for the next 41 years to overcome his resulting injuries. Throughout his life, he maintained a wonderful sense of humor and showed patience and kindness to those around him.  He had a deep faith in Jesus, which sustained him through difficult times and gave him assurance of his heavenly home.

He is survived by: his parents, Bruce and Anna Toms (Traverse City); siblings, Michael Toms (Interlochen) and Andrea (David) Elliott (North Liberty, Iowa); nephew, Eric Elliott; nieces, Sarah Elliott and Rebecca (Josh) Martinez; and great-nephew, Wyatt Martinez.

The family is eternally grateful for the compassionate care of the staff and therapists at The Lighthouse Rehab Center, who provided so many adaptive opportunities for Rob over the last 25 years.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Covell-Traverse City Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
