IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Roger William
Gehrt
December 23, 1945 – December 22, 2024
Roger William Gehrt, born on December 23, 1945, passed away peacefully at his home on December 22, 2024, just one day shy of his 79th birthday.
Roger is survived by his sister Gayle (Bill) Fuller-Steffel; his nieces Jennifer Fuller (Tom) and Amy Steffel (Chris); his grand-nephew Alex "AJ" Fuller (Kaley); and his grand-niece Aubrey Popovic. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lois Gehrt; his sister Carol Joyce; and Walter E. Dust.
Roger grew up in the Chicagoland area and graduated from George Washington High School on Chicago's East Side. He attended Valparaiso University with dreams of becoming a minister, a path that was cut short too soon.
Roger worked as an orderly at South Chicago Hospital for many years, where his compassion and care touched the lives of many. Later in life, he moved to Elk Rapids, Michigan—a cherished vacation spot for his family and a place he came to call home. He loved the beauty of the area and fondly reminisced about the days when family members worked picking cherries in the region.
In Elk Rapids, Roger became a beloved member of the community. Known as a "professional volunteer," he gave selflessly to local causes. Whether selling buttons at the Harbor Days Festival, teaching Vacation Bible School, visiting homebound church members, or helping friends and neighbors with countless tasks, Roger always sought ways to serve. A dedicated deacon, Roger's faith in Christ was the cornerstone of his life, inspiring his commitment to others.
Roger's vibrant spirit and colorful personality made him unforgettable. He had a gift for storytelling and a knack for sharing jokes, building friendships wherever he went. His gift of gab and warm heart meant he never met a stranger. Despite health challenges later in life, Roger continued to care for others and bring joy to those around him.
He was a man of extraordinary kindness, always ready to lend a hand and brighten someone's day. His generosity, optimism, and unwavering faith will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of Roger's life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church Angel Fund:
