Mr. Roger F. Skinner, age 95, died Sunday, November 26, 2006. Roger was born in 1910 in Weare Township. He walked these roads, fished these rivers, climbed the dunes, worked the orchards, and stacked the hay. Walking to Smith Corners' School and then to Hart for High School and County Normal were stories we heard about a lot. He taught Wilson School one year, then migrated to Newaygo, where he taught Little Jackson and Volney Schools. Roger attended Ferris State Institute, where he also taught ground school to Navy Cadets for the War Training Service. He continued his War Training Service work at Detroit Saint Clair Shores. Over the years, he taught at Highland park Junior College, Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, and Sheldon Jackson Junior College in Sitka, Alaska and ended his teaching career in Virginia. After retirement, he designed and directed the Water Treatment Facility in Franklin, VA. Roger was always an enthused learner, and was the recipient of National Science Foundation Scholarships, which he accepted gratefully. He in turn took this information to his students. He built a cottage, repaired anything that broke, took many piano lessons, traveled and camped across the United States, went to the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1934 and took tours in England and Europe. Roger painted pictures, won an award for his art work, had an art showing in 2002, entertained listeners with his humorous stories of growing up with horse and buggy, crystal radios, and potato harvesting "vacations". Roger was a good friend, teacher and student. He loved life and was ready to go on any excursions, including going to the mall! His life spanned more than 9 decades, and he enjoyed it all. We miss him and know that heaven is even better since he has arrived there. His children Barbara, Sandra, Christel, Ronald and Rebecca carry him in their hearts. His wife treasures their 66 plus years of marriage. He will be thought of as resting "in the everlasting arms" as promised in the Bible. The Memorial Service for Mr. Skinner will be held Sunday at 2 O'clock from Community Church, Ludington with the Rev. Ronald Hauk officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to the charity of your choice.
