Ruth Smith
June 10, 1954 – October 29, 2025
Ruth Smith, age 71, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2025, at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City, Michigan.
Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Ruth was the daughter of James and Gloria Willette. She graduated from St. Johns High School in 1972 and earned her degree from Northern Michigan University in Marquette in 1976. After graduation, Ruth made Traverse City her home, where she built a life filled with dedication, community, and love.
Ruth began her career at National Bank and Trust, where she worked for several years before transitioning into the field of outdoor advertising. She found her professional calling with Jack Dingman Outdoor Advertising and later with Lamar Advertising, where she remained until her retirement in 2016.
On October 10th, 1981 Ruth married the love of her life, Michael Smith. Together they shared a life of warmth, laughter, and mutual devotion.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Sister Linda of The Sisters of Providence, and her brothers James and John. She is survived by her husband Michael and a loving extended family, including Larry (Terri) Smith, Sharon McWethy, Jeff Smith, and Carol (Gary) John, as well as six nephews and five nieces who will remember her fondly.
Ruth's compassion extended beyond her family and career—she had a deep love for animals and a generous spirit. In her memory, contributions may be made to Munson Hospice House or Cherryland Humane Society.
She will be remembered for her quiet strength, her kindness, and the grace with which she lived her life. A celebration of life will be held at a later date this coming summer.
Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Covell-Traverse City Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
