Obituary

Steven Mayberry, age 67, passed away on June 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, friendship, generosity, and community involvement that will be remembered by all who knew him.

Born on November 28, 1958, Steven lived a life full of purpose, passion, and connection. On September 1, 1979, he married the love of his life, Caroline (Mastenbrook) Mayberry. Together, they shared nearly 47 years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, hospitality, and unwavering support for one another. As hosts, friends, and community members, Steven and Caroline had a remarkable gift for bringing people together and making everyone feel welcome.

Steven was a graduate of Whitehall High School and continued his education at Muskegon Community College and the University of Phoenix. An entrepreneur and businessman, he was the owner of Northland Insurance Agency and Mayberry BBQ, two ventures that reflected both his professional dedication and his passion for serving others.

Throughout his life, Steven remained deeply committed to his community. He proudly served as President of Rotary, supported the Muskegon Museum of Art, and previously served as a member of the Montague City Council. He believed in giving back and worked tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of those around him.

Steven enjoyed many hobbies, especially golf and cooking. Whether preparing a meal, competing at a barbecue event, sharing recipes, or gathering friends around a table, he found joy in creating experiences that brought people together. He never met a stranger and had a unique ability to make everyone feel like an old friend.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Caroline Mayberry; his siblings, Mary Ross (Roger), Mike Mayberry (Kim), Gary Mayberry (Russ), and Carl Mayberry (Tara); several cherished nieces and nephews; and countless friends, colleagues, and extended family members who were touched by his kindness, mentorship, and unwavering friendship.

Steven will be remembered for his quick wit, warm smile, creative spirit, generosity, kindness, and unmistakable sense of style. He was thoughtful, caring, and always willing to lend a hand. His presence could light up a room, and his laughter, stories, and friendship will be missed beyond measure.

Though his passing leaves a tremendous void, his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the community he helped build, and the memories shared by those fortunate enough to know him.

A life well lived, a heart well loved, and a man who will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to the Muskegon Museum of Art or Noah’s Project, two organizations that reflect Steven’s commitment to enriching the lives of others and strengthening the community he loved.

A green burial will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, June 18, 2026, at the Oak Grove Cemetery of Montague, located on the Southeast corner of Whitbeck and Dowling Streets.

A Celebration of Life honoring Steven will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the White Lake Eagles, 1204 S Lake St, Whitehall, MI 49461. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Steven are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate a life devoted to community, friendship, and service.
