Mrs. Thelma M. Hook died on November 30, 2013, at the age of 94. Thelma was born to Peter and Mary (Claeys) Kokx on June 21, 1919, in Weare Township. She married N.J. (Noble John) Hook, a World War II veteran and business man, on February 15, 1947, at Saint Simon Catholic Church in Ludington, Michigan. Thelma and N.J. were married for 46 years during which time they were blessed with five children. N.J. died unexpectedly on August 20, 1993.
Thelma knew at a young age that she wanted to be a teacher. Thelma graduated from Saint Joseph's Catholic Elementary School and Hart High School, and then went to County Normal. After teaching for several years, she continued her education by taking night and summer courses at Western Michigan University until she earned her Bachelor's degree in education, permitting her to fulfill her lifelong dream of being a school teacher. She taught in Batham, Cargill, Weare-Crystal, and Golden schools for twenty-five years and she loved all her students in every school system in which she taught. Thelma was a member of the Saint Gregory's Altar Society and a Eucharistic Minister at Saint Gregory Catholic Church, Oceana Hospital Auxiliary, Assistant 4-H Leader and a member of the Michigan Education Association and the Michigan Retired School Personnel Association. She loved traveling with her husband, N.J., and her children, working in the yard and garden, sewing, and playing cards with family and friends.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, N.J. Hook; and her siblings, LaVern Kokx, Harold (Lillian) Kokx, Evelyn (Isadore) Greiner, Linus (Margaret) Kokx, Genevieve (Henry) VandenHeuvel, Bernice (Albert) Bond, Josephine (Albert) VandenHeuvel, and W. Bob (Caroline) Kokx; and her sisters-in-law, Donna (Wayne) Purdy and Sally (Robert) Johnson.
Surviving are her children, Jan (Theresa) Hook of Ada, MI, Janice (Rodney) Larson of Salt Lake City, UT, Jon (Nancy) Hook of Toledo, OH, Jonda (Vincent) Greiner of Hart, MI, and Jane Hook of Williamston, MI; her grandchildren Christopher (Diane) Larson, of Cary, NC, Julie (Robert) Nilles of Houston, TX, Jeffrey Hook, of Jenks, OK, Laura (Phillip) Crowder of Edmond, OK, LTJG Michael Hook of Norfolk, VA, Jennifer Hook of Rocky River, OH, Nicholas Greiner of Hart, MI, and Bryant (Fiancée Anna Dvorak) Greiner of Mt. Pleasant, MI; great-granddaughters, Rosaline and Jacqueline Nilles and Erika Larson; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Thelma loved all her family and friends and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her for her smile, laughter, and wit. Her family wishes to thank Thelma's caregivers, Shelly Hilliard and Virginia Delgado for their care of Mom.
The Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Hook will be offered Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church with Father Thomas Bolster presiding. Interment will be in Hart Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at King Funeral Home, where the Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. The family requests in lieu of flowers that a donation be made to the Hart Area Public Library, 415 South State Street, Hart, MI 49420 or to Mass Intentions at St. Gregory Catholic Church, 316 South Peach Street, Hart, MI 49420.
