Obituary

Wilbur C. DeRuiter, age 75, of Hart, passed away September 17, 2010 at Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids, following a fishing accident that occurred on the Scottville River. Wilbur was born February 16, 1935 in Hart to Herman and Julia DeRuiter and married Dolores Spierenburg November 3, 1973. Wilbur was a life-long farmer who continued to hobby farm throughout his retirement. Wilbur enjoyed being involved in the community, working as a bus driver and mechanic for Hart Public Schools and volunteering for many years as a scorekeeper for the football and basketball games. Wilbur was also a volunteer fireman who served our community for several years. Wilbur was an avid outdoorsman who loved everything about nature. He loved to fish and hunt and enjoyed taking trips north to do both of these things. Over the years Wilbur learned how to fly, became a pilot, and owned his own plane, a Cessna 172. He enjoyed spending winters in Florida and learned to enjoy the game of golf. Wilbur enjoyed going camping over the years with his wife and grandkids. He loved the UP and enjoyed reading the Porcupine News on a regular basis. For the last several years, Wilbur has enjoyed his golf cart, his dogs, gardening, tinkering with his yard, and fishing the big lake.

Wilbur is survived by his wife Dolores of Hart; one step-daughter, Sandi (Joe) Rosse of Hart; three step-sons, Duane (Kathy) Swihart of New Era, Steve (Gladys) Swihart of Hart, and Dan (Cris) Swihart of Hart; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild; two nieces and one nephew; and his faithful dog ShyAnne. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Larry and Herman, and a sister, Mary Christian.
