IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William Andrew
Singer
May 8, 1954 – May 20, 2025
William Andrew Singer passed away unexpectedly on May 20, 2025, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, MI, from an aortic dissection. He was born in Memphis, TN, on May 8, 1954, to the late Francis (Frank) Singer and Anastasia (Ann) Touliatos Singer. Bill's father was serving in the United States military, and the family spent time in Ft. Walton Beach and Pensacola, FL. After Frank's discharge, they moved to Nashville, TN, before settling back in Frank's home territory, Cheboygan, MI. Bill graduated from Cheboygan Catholic High School in June 1972. He then spent one year at Northern Michigan University, before joining the Navy in April 1974. He served in various locations state-side, as well as deploying to the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas. One highlight was having shore leave in Athens, Greece, where he met his maternal grandfather's brother, and another was playing guitar in the ship's rock and roll band. He was honorably discharged on April 10, 1980. Bill then moved to Traverse City to attend Northwestern Michigan College, where he completed his associate degree in computer information technology.
On April 18, 1981, at a wedding reception for a couple he had met through mutual friends, he met Lynell Simpson, who knew the bride and groom from acting together in productions at The Old Town Playhouse. They noticed each other across the crowded room, introduced themselves, and were married on October 19, 1985.
Bill began his career working for Electronic Data Systems, which had the contract for Empire National Bank's data processing. When EDS left Traverse City, Bill stayed and worked other jobs before finding his professional home at Interlochen Center for the Arts. He began there in information technology, moved to purchasing, and eventually to the maintenance department. He finished his career as the Director of Maintenance in January of 2018, having facilitated some wonderful improvements to the beautiful grounds and buildings there, while establishing enduring friendships with many co-workers.
Bill and Lynell enjoyed an active life in the tennis community and made life-long friends, who, along with many high school friends and others he met along the way, remained an invaluable part of his life. Another passion for Bill was skiing, first cross country, and then the adventure of downhill. Bill and Lynell also loved to travel and enjoyed wonderful vacations in Colorado, South Carolina, Newport, RI, the New York Finger Lakes area, the Reno-Lake Tahoe area, and Hawaii. They spent many special times with Bill's family in Mississippi and Lynell's family in Santa Cruz, CA. Bill was loved and celebrated by all for his quick and wry sense of humor, for his love of music, especially great guitar, and for his bounteous culinary creations.
Bill is survived by his wife Lynell, his sister Karen and her husband Dick Van Sickle and their family in Mississippi, as well as extended family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Victoria. No service has been planned. Donations may be sent in Bill's memory to Interlochen Center for the Arts, Attn: Philanthropy, PO Box 199, Interlochen, MI 49643 or online at Interlochen.org.
Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Covell-Traverse City Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
